インドを旅しても、僕の価値観や生き方が劇的に変わることはない。しかし、そこで強く意識されるのは被写体との「距離感」である。灰まみれのサドゥーや闇の中で火を灯すチャイワラを前にしても、僕はそこに同化することなく、静かに距離を保ち続ける。

日常に潜む映画のような美しい瞬間は、当事者が没頭している最中には気づけないものだ。だからこそ、ただの旅人である僕がその光景を捉えることに意味がある。風景に溶け込む色彩や、光と闇が交差する視線を、溶け合うことも拒絶することもなく見つめる。

圧倒的な存在に直面した時や、無意識に撮り続けて距離感が極限まで薄まった刹那、息をのむような一枚が生まれる。それは諦めからではなく、思考がわずかにずれた瞬間に立ち現れるものだ。境界線を守りながらも、その隙間に存在する本質に触れたいという切実な願いが、僕のシャッターを切る衝動となっている。

Traveling through India does not dramatically alter my values or way of life. However, what I become acutely aware of there is the "distance" between myself and my subjects.

Standing in front of ash-covered Sadhus or Chaiwalas lighting fires in the darkness, I do not assimilate; instead, I quietly maintain my distance.

The cinematic moments hidden in everyday life often go unnoticed by those immersed in the reality of them. That is precisely why there is meaning in my capturing these scenes as a mere traveler. I gaze at the colors blending into the landscape and the intersection of light and shadow—neither merging with them nor rejecting them.

A breathtaking image is born when I confront an overwhelming presence, or in that fleeting instant when I shoot unconsciously and the distance thins to its absolute limit. This does not arise from resignation, but emerges in the moment when conscious thought shifts ever so slightly.

My impulse to release the shutter is driven by an earnest desire to touch the essence that exists in those gaps, all while strictly preserving the boundary. 

石原 友　略歴・プロフィール

1971年、京都生まれ。写真家、チャイワラ（チャイ屋）。

アメリカ滞在時、高校の授業で写真を学んだことをきっかけに撮影を始める。

帰国後、仕事の傍らインド、中国、アフリカ、ベトナム、イタリアをはじめ数多くの国を撮影して回る。なかでもPACHIMARHI、PUSHKAR、KUMBMELA、CITY MARKETの各地では10数年に渡り撮影を重ねる。

2005年に初個展を開催。主な個展に2017年「PACHMARHI CANTT」、2022年「Tomorrow is another day」など。

Tomo Ishihara

Born in Kyoto, 1971. Photographer and Chai Wallah.

Ishihara discovered photography during high school in the US. Since returning to Japan, he has documented travels in India, China, Africa, Vietnam, and Italy.

First solo exhibition in 2005. Major exhibitions include "PACHMARHI CANTT" (2017) and "Tomorrow is another day" (2022).

キュレーター

安井くまの　Kumano Yasui

京都市在住。英国立レスター大学MBA取得。

工芸、テキスタイル、ファッションを専門領域とし、物の背景にある文化や職人の手仕事、そしてそれらが現代生活にもたらす豊かさ、自由さに焦点を当てた企画を行う。

Curator based in Kyoto. She holds an MBA from the University of Leicester, UK.

Specializing in crafts, textiles, and fashion, she focuses on the cultural backgrounds of objects and the handiwork of artisans. Her curatorial work explores the "richness" and "freedom" that these elements bring to contemporary life.
